Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter's body arrives in Washington on Tuesday for three days of mourning beginning with him lying in state at the U.S. Capitol before a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.

The body of Jimmy Carter is being taken from his home state of Georgia to Washington DC, where the former US president will lie in state before a large state funeral. Carter died on 29 December, aged 100, in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

Carter’s remains, which have been lying in repose at the Carter Presidential Center since Saturday, will leave the Atlanta campus Tuesday morning, accompanied by his children and extended family. Special Air Mission 39 will depart Dobbins Air Reserve Base north of Atlanta and arrive at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland,
