Charles Dolan, who helped pioneer pay television, is dead at 98, his family confirms. He founded HBO and Cablevision, among other ventures.

"Sometimes A Great Notion" was the first movie ever shown on HBO, then known as Home Box Office Inc., the premium cable service that would change television forever. It was the brainchild of Charles Dolan.

Dolan amassed a fortune worth $5.6 billion as of the end of 2021, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Cablevision founder helped usher in a new era for television. He also acquired sports and entertainment properties including MSG and the New York Knicks.

Television pioneer Charles Dolan, whose work includes founding HBO and Cablevision, has passed away. He was 98 years old. Per Newsday, Dolan died of natural causes. His family confirmed his death with a statement that said,

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved father and patriarch Charles Dolan, the visionary founder of HBO and Cablevision," the statement read. "He is
