The executive orders designed to dismantle DEI policies within the federal government suggest companies—and colleges and non-profits—that don’t follow suit could face Justice Department lawsuits.

The orders cut funding for so-called DEI initiatives across all agencies in order to "end DEI inside the federal government," according to Trump administration officials. They also rescind numerous previous executive orders and actions from past administrations that aimed to promote diversity throughout the federal government.

Target is ending its diversity, equity and inclusion program this year, the retailer said on Friday, becoming the latest U.S. firm to step away from such policies in the face of severe scrutiny from conservative groups.
