Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen was rebuffed in El Salvador on Wednesday after seeking to meet with a Maryland resident "illegally abducted" from the U.S.

Van Hollen said El Salvador’s vice president told him he couldn’t see Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported on March 15 to El Salvador’s terrorism confinement center, known as CECOT, and that he might be able to arrange a phone call if the U.S. Embassy requests it.

US Sen. Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvador Wednesday seeking to meet with government officials there about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man who had been living in his state until he was mistakenly deported by the Trump administration last month to a mega-prison in the Central American nation.
