Firefighters in North Carolina and South Carolina continue to battle wildfires that grew rapidly over the weekend in rugged terrain, complicating containment efforts, officials said.

With much of Western North Carolina under moderate drought or abnormally dry conditions, wildfires are burning in the region. The largest fires in WNC were the Deep Woods and Black Cove fires in Polk County not far from Hendersonville,
In 2009, another large wildfire hit Horry County, where it burned more than 19,000 acres. Seven years later, the largest mountain wildfire in South Carolina's history ignited and burned more than 10,600 acres in Table Rock State Park after a campfire grew out of control.
The N.C. Forest Service has an interactive map showing wildfires across the state, with the size of the area involved and how far along firefighters are in efforts to extinguish it. As of Monday afternoon, March 24, the map showed 112 fires across the state on more than 3,484 acres.
Two wildfires over 2,900 acres in Polk County are uncontained while another at 152 acres is 50 percent contained.
