About 4,600 residents remain under evacuation advisories as the fire rages in the northern Iwate region, killing one.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency says there were 1,299 wildfires nationwide in 2023, and more than half occurred between February and April. It says the pattern is the same every year.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. This blaze is the largest forest fire Japan has faced since a 1992 wildfire in Hokkaido, which destroyed more than 1,000 hectares of land.
