A 7.7 magnitude earthquake rattled much of Southeast Asia on Friday, flattening skyscrapers and leaving more than 1,000 people dead from Myanmar to Thailand.

Aid is trickling into Myanmar, hampered by buckled roads and piles of debris. So far, 1,600 people are confirmed dead, and the toll is expected to rise.

The military-led regime has been weakened by a yearslong civil war. Now millions are counting on it to allow emergency aid.

Officers questioned four Chinese men who were found removing 32 files from containers behind the collapsed building, a police official said.
