Alaska completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines on Wednesday, the first major airline deal since 2016, when Alaska bought Virgin America. The purchase gives the airline access to more airports, planes and customers, which could accelerate Alaska’s growth, including by adding larger, widebody jets to its fleet that can fly longer distances.

After clearing a Department of Transportation review Tuesday, Alaska Airlines expects to close its merger deal with Hawaiian Airlines as early as Wednesday, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. The deal will vault Alaska to a much larger fleet and expand its international reach.
