Gov. Gavin Newsom has sent a letter requesting that the Trump administration bring Andry José Hernández Romero, who was deported to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador last month, to the U.S. for an immigration judge to hear his case.

U.S. judges in Texas and New York dealt blows on Wednesday to President Donald Trump's effort to revive deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members under a wartime law after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a nationwide ban on such removals.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court said that the Trump administration is required to "facilitate" the release of a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to an El Salvador prison. The court partly granted and partly rejected an emergency request filed by the Justice Department contesting a judge’s order that Kilmar Abrego Garcia be retrieved from a prison in El Salvador where he was sent on March 15 along with alleged Venezuelan gang members.

The Trump administration has conceded that it made a mistake in sending Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a notorious prison in El Salvador but argued it no longer could do anything about it.

Judges in Texas and New York have temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting Venezuelans jailed in parts of those states while civil rights lawyers challenge the use of the Alien Enemies Act.
