Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom announced on December 31 that it had begun reducing gas supplies to Europe through Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing a company statement.

Gazprom said it would pump a reduced flow of gas to Europe via Ukraine the day before a transit agreement with Kyiv is set to expire, Reuters reported Tuesday. The state-controlled energy giant said it would pump 37.

Without the Ukraine route, Gazprom has two remaining operational export routes that it could use to deliver gas to southern and central Europe, namely the Blue Stream pipeline and the newer TurkStream subsea pipeline, both of which cross the Black Sea to Turkey and have a combined annual capacity of about 48 billion cubic metres of gas per year.
