Only one of the 28 rest areas on Interstate 5 in California honors the freeway’s godfather, who oversaw the construction of the crucial link connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Construction work has temporarily shuttered the John Wilkie Safety Roadside Rest Area along Interstate 40 in the Mojave Desert.
The rest area is approximately 36 miles west of Needles and 105 miles east of Barstow, according to California officials, who added that the nearest rest area is 89 miles west in Newberry Springs.
