On Wednesday, county officials paid tribute to King, with some describing his legacy as a call to service and others saying there is more progress to be made in race relations.

The holiday is the only federally-designated day of service. People are encouraged to participate in a “day of action” and spend the day doing something charitable to uplift their communities.

Another big MLK Day event for the region is the 40th Annual Day of Celebration happening at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., at 11 a.m. Monday.
