(KKCO) - Xcel Energy has implemented new smart meters around the city ... During the wintertime, the gas usage goes up and the electricity goes down. In the summertime, it’s the other way.

Xcel will begin installing “smart meters” in homes across the state. While I understand that this is a means of more closely “monitoring” energy usage, the key word is monitor.

The utility estimated residential customers would see an average monthly increase of $2.64 in their gas bills, while small commercial customers would see a $14.07 spike.

The wholesale price of natural gas has gone up, which means the monthly bills of Xcel Energy-Colorado customers will likely follow.
