Waybourn said jailers had intervened and stopped 279 suicide attempts in 2023, and that number is already 350 this year.

We allowed full access to our facilities, staff, inmates, and documents. The NIC conducted a thorough assessment of the Tarrant County Jail and had no concerns. In fact, they said we are a "model institution" and referred to us as the "Cadillac of Jails."

The Tarrant County Sheriff's Office welcomed third-party experts to review the jail's healthcare procedures. Democratic County Commissioner Alisa Simmons says the federal government should still conduct a civil rights investigation.

The county commissioners in August approved hiring outside counsel for those jailers, Rafael Moreno and Joel Garcia, each for up to $30,000 as well. In September, they approved hiring three more for other jailers named as defendants in the suit, also for up to $30,000 each.

About a month ago, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says it got rave reviews from the U.S. Department of Justice's National Institute of Corrections. But at Tuesday's County Commissioner's meeting, Commissioner Alisa Simmons said the public was misled.
