Water managers in the South Bay entered into a deal that will add a huge amount to their storage by expanding the San Luis Reservoir in Merced County.

San Luis Reservoir between Gilroy and Los Banos, already the fifth largest reservoir in the state, San Luis would expand by 130,000 acre-feet — enough water for 650,000 people a year.

The San Luis Reservoir, which is located nearly 40 miles east of Gilroy, is the fifth largest reservoir in California, and it could soon get much bigger. It's because Santa Clara Valley Water District is working with other water agencies and the federal government on a plan to raise the dam by 10 feet.
