All signs point toward the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy coming to an agreement on a long-term contract extension in the offseason that makes Purdy one of the highest-paid QBs in the NFL.

A look at the quarterback's strengths and shortcoming as the 49ers begin negotiating a new, multiyear contract.

General manager John Lynch expressed a desire to get both of those contracts done sooner than later, but the 49ers played hardball and ultimately saw them take all of the preseason. He expressed a similar desire with Purdy’s deal in his end-of-season press conference.

Future Pro Football Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees believes NFL teams can learn from how the Purdy situation shook out in San Francisco.

There's no guarantee Brock Purdy will step foot on the practice field when the 49ers start OTAs in April. Purdy wants a contract extension and said he wants to finalize it before OTAs.

Purdy ranks fourth in the NFL in QBR (69.3), sixth in passing yards (9,075), first in yards per attempt (8.9), and seventh in passing touchdowns (61). However, the 49ers could choose to let Purdy play out the season and franchise tag him.

“Not at all,” Warner said. “Brock Purdy, he’s the man. He will be the 49ers quarterback for a very, very, very long time with plenty of Super Bowl rings on his fingers. He’s about to be a very rich man soon, and I can’t wait to see it.”

As the 49ers think about their future at the quarterback position, signing Brock Purdy to a long-term contract has become a must.

Among the leaders in APY (average per year) are Dallas’ Dak Prescott ($60 million), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55 million) and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million). Purdy has more value to the 49ers than all of those players.
