Amazon is eliminating users' ability to download Kindle books without WiFi, meaning you’ll want to move your library as soon as possible.

Downloading your Kindle books one by one could take days. But this hack helped me download thousands in far less time. Here's how it works, step-by-step.

If you're an avid e-book reader or someone who has an extensive library of Kindle content, now is the time to back up your books: Amazon is killing the option to save e-books to your computer.

Amazon confirmed the removal of the book download feature in a statement to The Verge. “Customers can continue reading books previously downloaded on their Kindle device, and access new content through the Kindle app, Kindle for web, as well as directly through Kindle devices with WiFi capability,” said Amazon spokesperson Jackie Burke.

Starting Feb. 26, 2025 (via ZDNet) you will no longer be able to download copies of your Kindle books and use those files as a backup. After that date, you will only be able to download books via Wi-Fi or through the Amazon platforms.

For those of you with any older Kindle model registered, now's your last chance to download your ebooks as files on your computer to keep them backed up. You will still of course be able to transfer all your titles wirelessly to your ereader, and use the Kindle desktop apps for Windows and macOS as before.
