The 2025 National Women’s Soccer League season is underway. On Saturday afternoon, two clubs hopeful to get off to a good start meet as the KC Current hosts the Portland Thorns.

In their 2025 home opener, the Current beat the Portland Thorns 3-1 behind goals from midfielders Temwa Chawinga and Michelle Cooper and striker Cristiane de Oliveira.

If you did a cut/paste on the Current’s 2024 record, dropping it into the standings from past NWSL seasons, KC would have the best mark in all but one of those years (2018). In 2024, the Current’s record left the club in fourth place, just one point away from second. The standings were tight at the top.
