MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — In 2022, Salman Rushdie was about to deliver a lecture before a live audience in western New York when a man ran towards him and plunged a knife into the author’s hand as he raised it in self-defense.

Jury selection has begun in the trial of Hadi Matar, who is accused of attempting to kill author Salman Rushdie in August 2022 at the Chautauqua Institution in New York.

The trial against the man accused of attempting to murder author Salman Rushdie in a stabbing attack in western New York got underway on Tuesday, with officials saying Rushdie is expected to testify in the coming days.
