OpenAI has now made this feature available to free users too, so they can join the viral trend of turning real-life photos into Japanese anime-style portraits. But there’s a hack—xAI’s Grok chatbot (powered by Grok 3) lets you create Ghibli-style images without shelling out $20 a month for ChatGPT.

OpenAIs Ghibli generation is inspired by Japanese-based animation company Studio Ghibli. Its roots are around four decades old. The studio-style Ghibli was founded by animators and directors Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao and producer Suzuki Toshio in 1985.
