Tennessee is pushing forward with a state-level grant program to build new electric vehicle chargers on the state's interstates and major highways, even as President Donald Trump's administration blocks similar spending from federal coffers.

Officials at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which manages the program, ordered state transportation directors to “decertify” the plans that all 50 states have used to outline where and how they will build their charging stations,

The Trump administration’s war on electric cars continues with the halt of a national program that sends money to states to install EV charging equipment. It was the latest move by President Donald Trump to reverse Biden-era EV policies — even as those policies have personally enriched his top ally, Elon Musk.

“The majority of Americans will read this and pick up that ‘Trump has killed EV charging,’” said Loren McDonald, a principal at the EV-charging data firm Paren. “For people that are on the fence on getting an EV, this means ‘I shouldn’t get one because I won’t be able to take that road trip.’”
